Serpentine Shelf-Edge Plate Holder

The curvilinear, almost free-form Plate Holder raises two questions. What was it originally designed for, because plates are a far from perfect fit (see side view above). More interestingly, was it cast as seen (molded?) or heat bent from a rod of acrylic? It did serve its purpose admirably, however. And was an item of interest in and of itself.
