Snow storms are good for retail, or at least good for Grocery, Fuel and Snow Shovel sales. The bigger the storm the better the business. Take advantage of the opportunity with merchandising targeted for a panicked public. I’ll take the White Wine please. My interest was the Ball-Stopped Reverse Waterfall Hooks, which in this case just happened to display an array of shovels, spades and pitchforks. The rack allowed Top-Mount Plug-In to Crossbars at two levels and facing both directions. Oversize Ball-Stops insured rough-and-tumble tools such as these were held in place. A Winter Snow Shovel merchandising “Whatsit” for sure. Now if it were Fall I would think this a Hand Scoop for pushing leaves and yard debris onto a rake, garden shovel, or using two as a leaf pickup. But for Winter use I am at a loss. I do recognized the outfitting as a 90º Tip Flatback Slatwall Hook however. Know that my personal grounds are natural in landscaping theme as I assiduously avoid yard work. So help me out if you can identify this retail “Whatsis” better than I.
This mobile grid Cold Weather Center allows positioning and cross selling when the weather is right at any high traffic store location, across a range of retail venues. Now you need not be a hardware store to take advantage of harsh weather sales trends. CLICK the thumbnail for a closeup of the masthead, and see that QR Code links to “How To” advice are part of the promotion. Personally I would have promoted larger, stronger, and included on all merchandise tags.
How Many Times Can a Product Be Branded in Good Taste? Here Kobalt® brands with its logotype 3 times, its logograph 4 times and its signature blue color 2 times. Even with all of that branding I am not sick of their name, nor find that it clashes. Two brandings are embossed directly into the metal shovel, so forever henceforth the owner will remember whose made it and where to buy again. Nice job Cobalt. So maybe the branding can be almost endless if well done?
A well-built Pallet Mount rack for Fall Rake and Shovel display, stocked 50-50 with each, both priced the same. But 25 Kobalt® Rakes were sold with Fall just beginning vs 7 Spade-fronted Shovels. I hope there is a mid-Fall rush on post hole digging needs because Spade Bladed Shovels are not useful for snow removal. I don’t think I can blame Kobalt for this imprecise stocking of the display. Both Rakes and Shovel are more suited to garden bed turning that Leaf Raking. Would I have stocked the display 4-to-1 Rakes to Shovels? I don’t think I would have gone more than 2-to-1 without marketing data. The good thing about the display is that you could adjust the offering however you pleased.

Why confine spades and shovels to some deep, dark location when you can cross sell with seasonal favorites with addition of a simple divided rack? The rack being non-specific, you can swap out the Spades for Beach Umbrella, Canes, Windshield Scrapers, Rain Umbrellas, Tiki Torches, Snow Shovels and all manner of linear merchandise. Being small, it is mobile and you can position where you like throughout the store. If you don’t have a general purpose divided rack like this, maybe its time you acquired one.
And express gas location used pallets and Dunnage Racks to merchandise Ice Melt, Windshield Solvent, Ice Scraper, Snow Shovels, Fireplace Logs and even Umbrellas. The horrible weather was a good motivator. And what could be more convenient than this bulk approach. Here in Pennsylvania we pump our own gas (unlike New Jersey which legally requires attendants) so while out of the car anyway, why not stock up. CLICK through the gallery for various views.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So Snow Disks and Sleds are cross-merchandised directly with Snow Scoops and Snow Shovels. If you don’t care for one, maybe then the other, or best choice of all, one of each. Snow Disks are slung side-saddle in a fixtures much akin to a Literature Holder or Frame Displayer. Other offerings are hooked with 90º Tip Single and Doulde Frontwire Utility Hooks. The entire rack is mobile allowing rollout on snowy Winter days. CLICK the thumbnail for a closeup of the Snow Disk and is display hardware.
A seasonal best-seller like Ice Scrapers deserve promotion if maximum sales are to be achieved. This Scraper Station, though Bar-based, functions as a PoserWing at a busy aisle intersection. Front-stopped Double Arm Utility hooks keep an oversize item in place. Literature Holders for two different size brochures are included, possibly for tips on ice scrapping? Whatever the literature content, its secrets must have been compelling. All were taken, as was have the stock of Ice Scrapers. CLICK the gallery to step through details.

Once Fall planting season fads, an early change to Winter Merchandise can keep the Garden Department active and profitable. While corporate preps the permanent signs, this aggressive store sales staff fills the gap with hand-lettered signs promoting Snow Shovels and Salt available in the Garden Department. Bravo, floor staff. CLICK the thumbnail for alternate angle or this home-made sign and directional solution.
