If you still have some of those vinyl LPs … or, god forbid, large-hole 47-inch format 45rpms … there’s a listening device for that. And it carries the famous (formerly famous?) brand name of Victrola® … the Apple®-iPod-maker of its era. This one is even portable so something of an early boombox, sans big bass speakers. With items this unusual, no visual merchandising support need. The item is the visual merchandising. Seen at Bed Bath and Beyond.

Vintage vs Prehistoric Music Technology Display and Merchandising
If you thought your trusty Mercedes Benz was old but in relatively good shape, compare to this early vintage model seen on the floor of Mercedes Benz® Manhattan. Even in this day it recalls Steam Punk attractiveness and fascination. But after a pause customers move on to the mainline offering of Mercedes Benz and the even more upscale AMG and Designo selections beyond. But do tour this model via the gallery of images below.
BACKSTORY:Mercedes Benz Manhattan is the only MB owned dealership in the United States. A flagship “boutique” dealership, it occupies a mega, multistory building on a 330,000 square foot lot on 11th Avenue between 53rd and 54th Streets. One of its most impressive amenities (to me) is auto-opening-garage-door access to drive-right-in, valet parking within the building. Just drive up and you and your vehicle will be welcomed in with open arms. Our favorite Mercedes Benz Manhattan associate: Sheik Nabijan, firstname.lastname@example.org, 212-629-1408. Ask for him by name, you won’t be disappointed. Get a full tour of the facilities and inventory as we did.
No “Big Data” here, but total Fendi® in-store personal service including vintage manual customer count. Imagine the pressure if you are responsible to meet sales targets in a high-rent luxury Mall setting and your hand counter read only 26 patrons for the day. The staff was friendly, delightfully chatty, and totally sales savvy. Initially the “Limited Edition” Runway purse was $6,500, but the staff later excused their mis-statement and quoted $5,400. What a relief. Almost seems a bargain now. Email if you care to see the rare Runway purse itself, for remember this is a fixture blog and the vintage counter is where I spent most of my time. My wife focused on the runway purse.
PS: In a technically up to date store I am asked not to hover near the door because I trigger the auto counter, and the more traffic it records, the more the staff is expected to sell for the day. Competitive sales environment, these Luxury Goods boutiques.
The chrome plating, and extent of coverage (all), said quality, even though the fixtures remained understated. The style was reminiscent of vintage fixtures so I wondered whether these are new issue, or refurbishing of traditional manufactured so well they will last forever and never wear out. CLICK through the thumbbnails and gallery to see that no modern banding or manufacturers logo can ve seen. Then compare directly to “Superior Model Form® Antique” below.
You choose: is this ornamental iron working or complex pipefitting? I was seduced by the intricately intertwined base. The clothing rack uppers were far more simple, straightforward and business-like. Maybe the Journeyman Pipefitter starts the construction and leaves his Apprentice to finish the less demanding uppers? CLICK through the thumbnail and gallery for all views.
The open construction of this filigree’d wrought iron table created the impression of additional store space even though darkly and moodily lit. Dress Shirts and Neckties were paired as the topic of the day. But click the thumbnail to see the display surface is divided and compartmentalized, possibly confining use to this application. See that the graceful swoop of the dividers and ball-end finials were in keeping with the high-end nature of the overall design. The gallery below provides additional views from a variety of distances.
Either an amazing amount of creative and production effort went into the creation of this antique-appearing clothing tag, or Polo Ralph Lauren’s historical stash of merchandising items stretches far, far earlier than the cited 1967 founding date shown. To me this style seems even 50 years older. But it is wonderful and eye-catching merchandising accessory with old time quality and attention to detail not seen today. Notice the twin grommet and rough natural twine tie. Also appreciate several seeming hand stamped additions to the tag, like the size, 34×32, stamped in red. Details, detail, details. CLICK the thumbnail for an overview. Nice job Ralph (I pretend we know each other but Ralph Lauren does not know me from Adam. Are you surprised?)
They just don’t make store fixtures like this Superior Model Form® antique anymore. The only upgrade seems to be the casters, because modern designs roll smoother, quieter, and are even available in non-marking tire materials. See in the thumbnail view that these museum pieces perform admirably. I would not have thought 100 year old (a guess) fixtures could do such a good job showing off both a long leggy jean look and how the jeans ride on curvaceous women’s hips. I wonder what these were selling in-store at the turn of the last century?
A retail incubator building includes as point-of-interest this antique cash register as well as other objects d’ art in the lobby. I’m not sure the bench is actual antique or reproduction, but both suggest lingering and engagement for passersby. The longer visitors stay and more interesting and engaging the environment, the greater the possibility of shopping various retailers and a final purchase. CLICK the thumbnail for a view of the combo. My how the cash wrap has changed over generations.
My actual interest here was the vintage wire basket display with folding wooden handles. But the colors of these Polo Ralph Lauren Fanny Packs were so vivid and fluorescent as to almost overwhelm the camera and blow out the image. Besides what copywriter could resist the alliteration of “Fluorescent Fanny” in a headline. CLICK the gallery for the Fanny Packs, stay with the main photo for vintage wire basket detail.
“Quote the Raven Nevermore” is the most famous of bird quote I know. And a gathering of Crows is called a “Murder.” Beyond that my knowledge of birds falls short so you might correct the genus I assign here. Maybe best to keep them caged if birds are your Halloween theme however. They can create a mess and bomb guests from the air.
